"Age and health conditions are 2 things that are most influenced by the duration and quality of sleep," said Danan Gu, Ph.D. from Portland State University who led the study, quoted by the ScienceDaily, Monday (05/03/2010).

Since 2005, Gu and his colleagues examine the 15,638 Chinese citizens aged 65 years and over, in all 22 provinces. A total of 2794 in among them 100 years old or more, while those aged 90-97 years as many as 3927 people.

Health problems are also closely related to the quality of sleep. Experience deep sleep on participants who have health problems observed 46 percent lower. This happened to participants who experience anxiety, chronic illness, and routine of life that is not fun.

Another fact revealed is that the relationship between the sexes with sleep quality. Experience deep sleep on male participants were 23 percent more than in female participants.

This survey was not designed to actually see the cause-effect relationships. However, the existing data, the authors believe there is strong correlation between quality of sleep to health and longevity.

China deliberately chosen as the location of the study, because the elderly population in the region recorded the highest in the world. Based on World Bank data (World Bank), nearly 40.5 million of a total of 1.3 billion people in China have aged 75 years or older.
